Terms & Conditions

Last updated: April 19, 2026

By downloading or using BackMe (“the app”) you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.

1. What BackMe is

BackMe is a personal-safety utility that lets you set a countdown timer; if the timer expires without being canceled, the app sends an email to the emergency contacts you saved on your device. Email delivery is handled by our third-party provider, SendGrid (Twilio Inc.).

2. What BackMe is not

BackMe is not an emergency response service and is not a substitute for emergency services (911, 112, 999, etc.). We do not contact police, fire, paramedics, or any first responders. In a real emergency, call your local emergency number.

3. No accounts

BackMe does not offer user accounts, sign-up, or sign-in. You do not create credentials, and we do not authenticate you. There is nothing to recover, reset, or transfer between devices through us.

4. Your contacts and data stay on your device

Emergency contacts, default messages, timer settings, and alert history are stored locally on your device. We do not maintain a server-side database of this information and we do not have a copy of your contacts. The only data that ever leaves your device is the alert email itself, and only when a timer expires (see § 5).

5. How alerts are delivered

When a timer expires, the app composes an email containing your message, the recipient addresses you selected, and your location if (and only if) you enabled GPS for that timer. That payload is sent over HTTPS to SendGrid, which delivers the email. If you cancel the timer in time, no email is composed, sent, or stored anywhere.

6. Service limitations

  • Email delivery depends on internet connectivity, your device's background-execution permissions, and SendGrid's availability. Delivery and timing are not guaranteed.
  • Location accuracy depends on your device, GPS conditions, and whether you granted location permission. The app may include approximate or no coordinates.
  • Because contacts are stored only on your device, losing or wiping your device will lose your saved contacts. We cannot restore them for you.
  • We may pause, change, or discontinue features at any time.

7. Your responsibilities

  • Keep your contact list accurate, up to date, and back it up yourself if you want a copy outside the app.
  • Inform your contacts that they may receive a BackMe alert email from you, and that the email may contain your location.
  • Use the app for lawful, personal-safety purposes only. Do not use it to harass, spam, or repeatedly send unwanted alerts to people.
  • Test the app occasionally so you know your device's background and notification permissions are configured correctly.

8. Acceptable use

You may not use BackMe to send misleading emergency alerts, to impersonate another person, to send unsolicited bulk email, or in any way that violates SendGrid's acceptable-use policy or applicable law.

9. Liability disclaimer

To the maximum extent permitted by law, BackMe is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for any harm arising from a missed, delayed, undelivered, or mistakenly sent alert, or from the loss of locally stored contacts.

10. Termination

You may stop using the app at any time by uninstalling it. Because there are no accounts, uninstalling fully ends your relationship with the service from our side. We may suspend or restrict access to features if we believe the app is being misused.

11. Changes

We may update these Terms. Material changes will be reflected by a new “Last updated” date.
